Nearly almost done with the clean up

1 week and three days into our stay here and we're finally on top of things.

Got the red cushions out, scrubbed and waxed the terrazzo and I am finally ready to put my feet up and have a day of relaxation. It's been excellent weather for it: Rain every day, on-shore winds and grey, cloudy weather.

John's been working like a hero in garden, raking and getting rid of fallen palm leaves, grass roots, weeds etc. etc.

The big bonus for Tuesday was that we had the electricity on the whole day. Whop-whop!

Milkshakes galore!

Normally we only have power from 18.00-06.00 except Sundays where we sometimes are so lucky to have power all the way until 15.00.

The latest news from the island is that we are expecting a cyclone to hit this weekend. I really hope it will die down in strength and hopefully miss out on us all together. Would be absolutely devastating to start clean up round 2 straight after we just finished our first one……….

I hardly ever get sunburnt.

Besides maybe some mishaps in my teens, where I used to slather my body in oil come first sign of sunshine, I've now learnt to use protection out there in the sun, and living in the tropics you get more aware of exactly how bad the sun can be for your skin.

So yesterday I had my first surf in 5 months. I dragged John with me down to my little wave and it was perfect conditions, winds were good, (hardly any wind at all), and perfect wave size and since it has been so long since we've been in the water it was just total bliss to be out again on a board and when you are having fun, time flies.

Anyway, came home and realised that I had gotten so sunburnt my whole backside was pink. This despite us slathering on the Spf 30 waterproof before we went out. I had forgotten how strong the sun is down here this time of year.

Today I can hardly walk.

Away but still home

We have finally arrived back to our beautiful Paradise.

This year we arrive back into a minor devastation.

The dude we had staying here working for us in the off-season decided to split around December, (we think) and since then we've had goats and pigs into our property.

We built what we thought was a goat proof fence from the front but these smart buggers have gotten into our place through our neighbours fence.

The sand is dug out, the bouganvilleas have all been eaten, some of our Frangipani's have died, the creeper we had growing has grown all over the place and is now about to climb onto our main house. My Papaya and Banana trees have all died. So sad...

All in all it looks like a little tiny bomb went off at our place.

Since we had given our now sacked worker the keys to our guest room and since he has gone walkabouts we've now had to break into our own Gudang to get all our cleaning equipment into gear.

Thank heaven for Greg as he invited us over for dinner at his resort the first night we were back. He was also kind enough to give us a forewarning before we got here about the state of the place.

Since that Tuesday night, we have been surviving on Muesli and yoghurt for breakfast and dinner as we missed the Tuesday Markets.

We've been working non-stop since Tuesday and today I can finally sit back and exhale and open my eyes and take in my surroundings.

It is great to be back here.

What's even better: My cats survived the off season. I had left 4 enormously huge cat food bags which were all empty and the workers from next door told me they had been keeping an eye out for them.

They are all happy now, they have moved into the kitchen, too scared to miss a meal but all friendly and happy. (All five of them).

The lounge room we managed to clean up yesterday and I can finally say I am ready for a good book and a long day at the beach!

PS: The winds are on-shore and it is raining every day. The island itself is as lush and green as I've ever seen it and the rice fields are looking real healthy.

Cafe Bali

One of my favourite restaurants here in Kuta is Cafe Bali.
Everything from the interior/ambience to the food just hits the spot for me.

I could easily move into this place.
So whenever we are in Bali we always pop in here at least once during a stay.
It has free wi-fi and open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Well worth a visit if you are in Seminyak and wondering where to go for something good to eat.


Bali is an island in Indonesia. It has a population of around 3,891,000 people.

Most of them practising the Balinese Hinduism which you can see on a daily basis as they are offering little gifts to their gods throughout the day.

Each little village has their own temples, and even here in Kuta each hotel and neighbourhoods has their own designated area where they pray to their gods.

Bali is also the largest tourist destination by far in Indonesia and has highly developed arts, including dance, sculpture, painting, leather, music and so forth. Bali has been a tourist destination for years and yet every year there seem to be more and more tourist flocking to the island most of them to enjoy Bali's renowned surf beaches.

The shopping and restaurant life in Bali seems to be getting stronger every year with funky gems popping up all over the place.

Our favourite place to eat out in Kuta is on Jl. Oberoi, also called "Eat Street" where a magnitude of really good eateries can be found.

The Junction

After a speedy retreat from the beach we went on to get through the rest of the day. First on our list is to rent a motorbike so we can get around Kuta a bit easier.
We then head to the money changers to change our money. (PS: Never change your money at the airport as the rate is a rip off there). The rate on the board is for Saturday 19/03/2011
We then rush around to do as much food shopping as we can to take with us down to our little Paradise.
At the end of the day we collapse into "The Junction". A really tasty restaurant in Jl. Oberoi.
They have free wi-fi there and seeing we STILL do not have a SIM for our phone we bring our laptops here and reconnect with the world.
My favourite thing here is the "seafood curry",
while John loves the steak.

Bodily hang up's

Winter hides a multitude of sins.

Hairy legs, an ever expanding waistline, cellulite and a fabulous blue/grey/whitish skin colour, and I must admit I hadn't given any of these much of a thought until today.

Our first day in Bali, and we wake up in our hotel room nearly a full day after we landed, so jet lagged and tired that we must've slept for like 14 hours straight.

Time to get into a bikini and go for a walk on the beach.

But hang on a second: I cannot remember me being this white since forever. And where did all these soft lumps, (read: love handles), come from. And what is this on my bum? Cellulite? Never!

Somehow my brand new hot pink bikini does not look so good on my still bluish coloured body. What was I thinking?So I have two choices here: I can stop self obsessing too much over my body and head to the beach and just enjoy feeling the beautiful rays on the sun on my body again or I can go back to sleep.

I choose off course the first. Happy to be free of clothes we walk down to the beach only to be met by some of the local Bli's that John has known since forever.

"John, Hildi! When you back? Very Fat yeah?!" And the dude proceeds to pat John on the stomach


And all my built up strength comes crashing down.

Singapore airlines

Singapore Airlines may just be the best airline company I have ever flown with. So far. Normally we fly out of London with British Airways/Qantas but this year Singapore Air had the better connections and better prices.

It is plenty of leg room in the Economy class, big screen with endless opportunities to watch anything from the latest movies to Documentaries, (I ended up watching "The Kings Speech" again), the stewardesses are friendly and make sure you have plenty to drink on your flight.

Baked Camembert cheese

Japan got me hooked on cheesy stuff and the baked camembert cheese is just absolutely mouth watering.
Bake at 200 degrees for about 25-30 mins. Take the wrapper off the Camembert but place it inside the wooden box that it comes in and bake it in that. Make sure the wooden box is stapled and not glued as the glue doesn't really taste all that delish.
To be shared with people you love and preferably a glass of red wine and some carrot/celery sticks plus salty biscuits that you dip into the gooey consistency of the cheese.

Troika Bombe!

In Norway we have a chocolate called Troika, which is made up of dark chocolate, raspberry gele, and marzipan and studies have shown that if you ABSOLUTELY have to eat chocolate, this specific chocolate is actually not so bad for you.
So, here is a fantastic easy dessert to make:

3 decilitre whipping cream
1 big can of Melon yoghurt
1 can kesam yoghurt w/vanilla
4 Troika chocolates- crushed
1 can fruit coctail, drained

Mix everything together and serve it cold with a bit of citrus peel on top.

An evening with the girls

I've been blessed with just awesome girlfriends.
I miss them a lot when I am out travelling and it is always such a joy to re-unite with them.
I've known most of these wonderful girls since we were 7 years old and we have grown up together, been through trauma's and joys together and even though we are far away from each other the connection we all share with each other is always there.
The evenings we get to share is filled with memories and laughter and joy.
A huge uplift for the soul.

Spring, summer for about 1 minute , autumn and this morning back to winter.
But you can feel that spring is just around the corner and the gnomes in mum's backyard is overly excited.

Jet lag and painting

So we are back in London after our trip to Japan and I am seriously jet-lagged. Had very little sleep on the plane coming here thanks to a 3 year old boy that was seated in the seat behind me and he tried to demolish my seat by continuously kicking it. After about two hours of this I tried to turn around and give the parents the stink eye, unfortunately I gave the stink eye to the wrong guy, an innocent person who was unfortunate to sit next to the kid. (I didn't realise this until we got off the plane).
We got in at 0500 in the morning and just trying to stay awake that day was horrible. Went to bed at seven that night and slept like a log.

John however, (the super-energizer bunny), got up at 0300 in the morning to start to paint one of our bedrooms. (As you do when you are jet lagged).
This morning he was up at 0400 to finish off the job. The room looks ten times better and I have no idea where he gets his energy from. Can I have what he is having please?

So it was my birthday yesterday and the John's took me to this awesome bakery where we had the last lunch before we went our separate ways.
I totally overindulged but it was well worth it.
